Minister of Education Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum The Minister of Education Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum has called the Vice Chancellors (VCs) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the University of Ghana (UG)  to an emergency meeting concerning the Autor General’s report which revealed  that these public universities are running unaccredited programs. Thi s  meeting has been scheduled to take place on Friday September 2end, sources told TV3 on Thursday September 1. According to the Auditor-General’s Report, 374 academic programs at the University of Ghana are unaccredited. The 299 programs at KNUST were also not At the University of Ghana, out of the 374 courses not accredited, 14 were Diploma programs, 80 were Undergraduate courses, 213 were Post-Graduate courses, and 67 were PhD courses. An amount of ¢485 million has been paid as Cost-of-Living Allowance (CoLA) by the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD). The Controller and Accountant  General Department made the announcement in a statement on Monday August 29. “Pursuant to the approval given by the Ministry of Finance on 1st August 2022, following the Agreement signed between Government and Organized Labour on 14th July 2022, the Controller and Accountant-General has paid the Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) to workers in Public Service Institutions. “The COLA which represents fifteen percent (15%) of the 2022 basic salary was paid for the months of July and August. The total amount paid for COLA for the two months is Four Hundred and Eighty-Five Million Ghana Cedis (GH¢485,000,000.00),” the statement said. Upper East Police Commander The Upper East Regional Police Command has announced the arrest of 18 suspects in Bawku, following the recent disturbances in the area. The Public Relations Officer for the Command, ASP David Fianko-Okyere, said the arrest is in line with the murder of a horse trader at Gozezi, adding that the suspects will be screened and put before court later today, March 15. The horse trader is said to have been killed by some unknown assailants after he was accompanied by another resident to move one of his horses from Widana to Bawku. “We have arrested 18 people and they are all under investigation and by close of today, they will be sent to court for further investigations. “We are currently interrogating and screening these 18 people and preparing for further investigations,” he told Citi FM in an interview. The 13 individuals who were arrested for their alleged involvement in the Bawku chieftaincy conflicts are expected to appear before court today. There were gunshots in the early hours of Monday, December 27, 2021, which resulted in the loss of lives and the destruction of properties in the township. The University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (UTAG) has urged members nationwide to honor its decision to return to the classroom on Monday, February 28, 2022. The Association had already communicated its readiness to temporarily comply with the court order to resume work after an injunction was granted the National Labour Commission (NLC). The suspension will last until March 4. However, a referendum conducted by the UTAG’s National Executive Council show an overwhelming rejection from public universities of the decision to pick up their tools. As the results of the ongoing referendum trickle in, the lecturers are expected to consider the outcome within five days according to UTAG regulations.
