Return to class while we negotiate towards March 4 deadline – UTAG urges lecturers

Image
The University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (UTAG) has urged members nationwide to honor its decision to return to the classroom on Monday, February 28, 2022. The Association had already communicated its readiness to temporarily comply with the court order to resume work after an injunction was granted the National Labour Commission (NLC). The suspension will last until March 4. However, a referendum conducted by the UTAG’s National Executive Council show an overwhelming rejection from public universities of the decision to pick up their tools. As the results of the ongoing referendum trickle in, the lecturers are expected to consider the outcome within five days according to UTAG regulations. Return to class while we negotiate towards March 4 deadline - UTAG urges lecturers “we wish to urge all UTAG members to kindly return to the lecture rooms to teach as per the circulars released by the Management Team of the various Public Universities till the NEC of UTAG states otherwise,” the

Who will take Bawumia seriously as a Presidential candidate for NPP in 2024? – Kwakye Ofosu

Image
Former Deputy Information Minister, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has indicated that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, cannot be considered a prospective Presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 general elections. Speaking on JoyNews on Tuesday, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu explained that the reputation that precedes the Vice President due to his abysmal performance in the running of the economy will make him untenable as a candidate. According to him, the Vice President will not be taken seriously as a presidential candidate by electorates because he has failed to defend some of government’s policies despite being the head of the Economic Management team. Interacting with the host of AM Show, Benjamin Akapko, he said: “The point is that what he (Bawumia) is noted for or his claim to fame in the past was economic management. He has been so spectacular that he is running away from the very record he has supervised. As head of the Economic Management team, he has supervised the

NPP will lose 2024 elections with Bawumia or Alan – Felix Kwakye Ofosu

Image
Former Deputy Information Minister, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has stated that the “BreakThe8” campaign led by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not materialise. According to him, this is because the governing party will lose the 2024 general elections irrespective of the presidential candidate they settle on. Speaking to Benjamin Akakpo on JoyNews’ AM Show, Mr Kwakye Ofosu said Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Trades Minister Alan Kyerematen, said to be best placed to replace President Akufo-Addo will be no match for the opposition National Democratic Congress. He argued that both state officials have performed woefully in the management of the economy, therefore, would find no favour in the eyes of the Ghanaian electorate. “The fact is that the NPP are going to engage in a race to the bottom. It is an in-fated decision they will make. The point is that whoever they bring will lose. The point is that what he (Bawumia) is noted for or his claim to fame in the past was economi

Death has forgotten me – Woman who witnessed First World War

Image
Euphrasie Kanyundo “I want to die because I am tired and weak. Others are working all I do is sleep the whole day, yet I want to eat. I think death has forgotten me,” a tired 106-year-old woman has said. Euphrasie Kanyundo is reminding death of her long existence. Having witnessed the First World War, said she has enjoyed the full capacity of life on her own terms and she wants death to embrace her as soon as possible. Though she is not unhappy in life as she is surrounded by a host of descendants who take care of her, she said her frail state makes it uneasy for her to enjoy life like she used to. The aged African grandmother told Afrimax TV that she is tired of living her life like a baby; being lifted about and having to crawl on her butt. However, she is physically healthy and still has a couple of teeth sticking out of her gums. If death fails to approach in the coming days, Euphrasie Kanyundo fears she will have to break the heart of her children with her last option; suicide. He

UTAG STRIKE: No politician can call It off, Only Members; Gyampo

Image
Secretary to the University of Ghana Chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) Prof Ransford Gyampo says it is out of place for any politician to claim that it has called off the group’s ongoing strike. According to him, lecturers will not bow to pressure from any quarters to do so until they feel their demands are met. This follows a meeting between UTAG leadership, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, Minister for Education, Minister for Employment and Labour Relations and the Parliamentary Committee on education on Thursday. According to Ranking Member on the Education Committee in Parliament, Peter Nortsu Kortoe, UTAG had agreed to end the industrial action during the meeting which lasted hours. “On our appeal, they have agreed to call off the strike on the condition that government is ready to sit down with them immediately for them to resolve outstanding matters. The Minister gave us the assurance that they are going to be committed. Once the Committee has

Aggrieved NABCo trainees hit the streets to protest delay in salary payment

Image
Beneficiaries of government’s Nation Builders Corps (NABCo) programme are set to hit the streets today in protest of what they call an undue delay in the payment of their allowances. An extension of their service period by government has not been followed with the necessary financial commitment as many of them are yet to be paid in the past six months. Recently, some trainees took to social media to demand payment of their allowance arrears, saying life has become unbearable for them. Some also blamed the government for abandoning them, adding that they have been “perishing in extreme hunger and deprivation.” “I depend on my parents for survival; so, as a NABCo trainee, life has been very unbearable, and as you know, we have been in the corporate environment for a while.”  'Life has been very unbearable for us’ – NABCo trainees lament “Three years now, and honestly speaking, just last week some sections of trainees received September and October allowances, but they were paid sel

Minority pushes for closure of public universities amidst UTAG strike

Image
Dr. Clement Apaak The Minority in Parliament has demanded the closure of public universities in the country as the strike action by University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) enters the sixth week. Speaking to JoyNews, Deputy Ranking Member on the Education Committee, Dr Clement Apaak, noted that the continuous stay of students on the various campuses exposes them to several dangers. He cited the first-year student at the University of Ghana, Legon, who got drowned in a campus-based pool during the fourth week of UTAG’s strike, to buttress his point. According to Dr. Apaak, if the Labour Division of the Accra High Court hearing the case brought before it by the National Labour Commission (NLC), does not order UTAG to call off the strike on Tuesday, the universities must shut down. “If the outcome of today’s hearing does not lead to a conclusion or resolution, then the Vice Chancellors of our universities should do the needful by letting the young men and women go home. What is the

COURT'S ORDER FOR UTAG TO CALL OFF THE STRIKE PROGRESSIVELY

Image
The Ministry of Education believes that the court order for striking public university lecturers to return to the classroom is progressive and affords government the opportunity to properly engage the lecturers on their demands. According to the ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Kwesi Kwarteng, the ministry is hoping that a lasting solution will be found and lecturers permanently returning to the lecture rooms. Speaking on Eyewitness News, he said the ruling of the court is in the right direction, as Ghana’s labour laws are explicitly against an aggrieved party being on strike while negotiations are ongoing. “For us, we find it a bit progressive the decision by the court that granted the injunction relief which was being sought by the National Labour Commission because, in the end, parties would have to get back to negotiations and the laws of our land is very clear. It is clear that you are unable to negotiate when you are on strike,” He said he is hopeful that the UTAG members wil

I'll Be Very Careful Supporting #Fix The Country Openly _ Manasah Azure

Image
Manasah Azure Anti-graft campaigner, Manasseh Azure, has indicated his hesitation to openly support the #FixTheCountry Movement following the arrest of one of their conveners. Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a convener of the movement has been arrested and is facing charges of treason following an alleged ‘coup-inciting’ comment he made on social media. His comment was in reaction to footage of an e-levy designed cake which was cut during the 65th birthday celebration of the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu. According to Manasseh, Barker-Vormwaor’s statement is “very reprehensible and I think it is extremely unfortunate.” “And what he has done beyond the legality and everything else is really hurting the movement he’s leading because from now onwards I will be very careful in pushing for, or supporting FixTheCountry Movement openly which I’ve always done because I don’t know the intention of those people leading it – some people like him. And so I think it is very unfortunate,” he sai

Minority accuses Akufo-Addo of insensitivity for using luxurious private jet for 10-day foreign trip

Image
The Minority in Parliament has for the umpteenth time accused President Akufo-Addo of insensitivity to the plight of Ghanaians. According to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) legislators, the decision by the President to once again embark on his 10-day trip to some European countries and Guyana on a chartered luxurious private jet, at a time when government is seeking to introduce the E-Levy is the highest level of disregard for the sufferings of the masses. Speaking to the media in Parliament on Friday, the Minority’s Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said the President is spending over GH¢4 million on his trip. “In the midst of these demonstrations and all the widespread agitations, the President, at 1pm yesterday, took off on the ultra-luxurious LXDIO which cost the Ghanaian taxpayer $14,000 an hour.” “This six-nation tour, we have done the conservative estimate. At the end of the tour, when the President returns, he would have spent a colossal amount o
