Who will take Bawumia seriously as a Presidential candidate for NPP in 2024? – Kwakye Ofosu

Former Deputy Information Minister, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has indicated that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, cannot be considered a prospective Presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking on JoyNews on Tuesday, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu explained that the reputation that precedes the Vice President due to his abysmal performance in the running of the economy will make him untenable as a candidate.

According to him, the Vice President will not be taken seriously as a presidential candidate by electorates because he has failed to defend some of government’s policies despite being the head of the Economic Management team.

Interacting with the host of AM Show, Benjamin Akapko, he said: “The point is that what he (Bawumia) is noted for or his claim to fame in the past was economic management. He has been so spectacular that he is running away from the very record he has supervised. As head of the Economic Management team, he has supervised the worst economic situation under the 4th Republic.

This will make him completely untenable as a candidate for the NPP. Exactly what is he going to tell the electorate? Who is going to take him seriously after all the falsehoods he peddled have been revealed for what they are, falsehood. The man has not even had the courage to step out there and defend his economic record. He is not a viable candidate.”

“I’m not sure why people are even motivating him,” he added.

Mr Kwakye Ofosu noted that the words uttered by Dr Bawumia would lead to his downfall in a race for the highest title of the land.

“All you need to do in a campaign against him is to play his own voice and that finishes the matter. He will be a terrible candidate. He is a poor candidate. The reality shows that Dr Bawumia has no credibility as we speak. Nobody in the Ghanaian space takes him seriously.”

In December last year, some Ghanaians on social media matched the promises of Dr Bawumia against the introduction of government’s Electronic Transaction Levy (E-levy).

They reminded the Vice President about some of his comments in the past regarding taxation in Ghana.

In the videos shared, Dr. Bawumia said: ‘I don’t think Mobile Money should be taxed because most of the people who use the service are poor people so if you put more taxes on it, they will suffer’, Dr. Bawumia stated.

Since the introduction of the levy that has sparked controversy, the Vice President has made no emphatic comment commending or condemning the intiative.

Meanwhile, Mr Kwakye Ofosu has noted that irrespective of the candidate chosen, the governing New Patriotic Party will lose the 2024 general elections.

“The fact is that the NPP are going to engage in a race to the bottom. It is an in-fated decision they will make. The point is that whoever they bring will lose.”
